Project type: Renovation of an existing townhouse in a rural village in the mountains of Valencia, this project reimagines a traditional dwelling to better support contemporary living while respecting its historic character and mountain setting. The intervention focuses on creating a new, open living, dining and kitchen area that becomes the heart of the home, improving spatial flow, natural light and connection to the surrounding landscape.

The original townhouse, typical of the region, featured cellular rooms with limited daylight and a fragmented layout. The redesign carefully removes selected internal partitions to establish a generous, unified living space at ground level. This new living–dining–kitchen area is conceived as a warm and social environment, encouraging gathering and shared daily life. Structural reinforcements were discreetly integrated to maintain the integrity of the existing masonry walls while allowing wider openings and improved circulation.

Natural light was a key driver of the design. Openings to the street and rear patio were enlarged where appropriate, and new glazing elements were introduced to draw sunlight deep into the plan. The kitchen is positioned to overlook the outdoor space, strengthening the relationship between interior and exterior and framing views of the mountainous terrain beyond. Materials were selected to reflect the local vernacular—stone, lime-rendered walls and timber—paired with contemporary finishes to create a balanced dialogue between old and new.

Thermal comfort and energy performance were upgraded through improved insulation, new services and high-performance windows, ensuring year-round efficiency in the mountain climate. The result is a sensitive yet transformative Renovation  that preserves the spirit of the rural townhouse while introducing a bright, cohesive living space suited to modern life in the Valencian mountains.
